Interacting with imagery
Overview
Users of satellite imagery care about the what, where, and when. The first version of the mapping interface allowed a user to search and filter, and look at a table of scenes (one satellite image) that matched these parameters. There might be 3, 10, or even no scenes in a given month, and a list of captures did not visually communicate the temporal resolution of imagery - the "when". We sought to rethink how time could be integrated into the list of satellite imagery.
Role
- Co-lead design sprint with designers, engineers, and PMs
- Created wireframes, crazy 8's, journey mapping
- Produced all high fidelity mockups for this feature
- Worked side by side with front end engineering for buildout
Design sprint
Use case: I want to find all imagery available within my farm property in Fresno,CA, within April. I then want to browse between images to select an image(s), and ingest them into my own workflow.
Mockups
I created the mockups in sketch, making sure to adhere to our product style guide and the ease at which the feature could be "componentized".
Prototype
I created the following Invision app prototype to test the user flow with the rest of the design and engineering team. It was built fast and highlighted UX issues without any code!
Solution
This design aimed to improve a few things: The previous version had Filters and Scenes in separate containers and I wanted to combine the two so that the user would not lose context while interacting with this data. I also wanted to take scenes into a different "Map View" that helped the user focus on the task at hand rather than interacting with search, map tiles, and the main navigation bar. Third, the design of the vertical timeline moves the user to more of a visual language of how the data is distributed.
