Using Map Tiles

A Map tile is a map displayed in a browser by seamlessly joining dozens of individually requested image files over the internet. Our goal was to build geo-tools that supported developers bringing data into their applications, and extracting Map Tiles was a frequent workflow.

Role

  • Worked with design, engineering and PMs to brainstorm feature
  • Wireframed potential solutions
  • Produced all high fidelity mockups for this feature
  • Worked side by side with front end engineering for buildout

Product Walkthrough

Use case: I want to find all imagery available within my farm property in Fresno,CA, within April. I then want to browse between images to select an image(s), and ingest them into my own workflow.

Mockups

I created the mockups in sketch, making sure to adhere to our product style guide and the ease at which the feature could be "componentized".

Solution

The custom map tiles URL is generated every time a user adjusts a search or filter query. A user conducts a search, filters on metadata parameters,  and then only needs to press a button to copy/paste a URL that will bring these tiles into their own app.
